Your own ant colony.
No mess. All the science.

Pocket Colony is the idle simulation where you manage water, food, brood and workforce, just like real ant keepers do. Run raids, defeat rival colonies, and keep your colony alive long enough to take flight. The game that turns players into ant keepers.

You're already learning
how to keep ants

Every mechanic in Pocket Colony mirrors real ant husbandry. By the time you prestige, you genuinely understand what it takes to run a live colony: humidity, diet, brood care, workforce management and all.

💧

Water & Humidity

In-game: Water level management

Real colonies need precise moisture. Too dry and ants desiccate. Too wet and fungus kills the brood. You've been managing exactly this since day one.

🌾

Diet & Nutrition

In-game: Carbs, seeds, leaves, nectar and silk across 6 species

Ants need carbohydrates for energy and protein for brood development. As you progress, whole economies shift: leafcutter ants run on a living fungus garden, honey pot ants on desert nectar stored in living workers, and weaver ants on larval silk woven into expandable leaf chambers.

🥚

Brood Care

In-game: Egg → Larva → Pupa pipeline

Watching your brood develop through three distinct stages mirrors the real lifecycle. Maintenance workers and the right conditions are everything.

🐜

Workforce Roles

In-game: Foraging / Hunting / Maintenance sliders

Real colonies organise workers into task groups. In Pocket Colony you manage that balance directly. Forage too hard and the nest suffers.

⚔️

Territory & Raiding

In-game: Raids, foraging events & invasions

Real ant colonies defend territory, raid competitors, and forage under pressure. In Pocket Colony you choose your targets, weigh the risk, and send your workers in, just as real colonies do.

🐜

Nuptial Flight & Castes

In-game: Prestige / species progression

The "Nuptial Flight" prestige mechanic mirrors exactly how new colonies are founded in nature: a queen flies, lands, sheds her wings and starts from scratch.

Each one a completely
different challenge.

Progress through increasingly complex colonies. Each tier introduces a new species, a new economy, and a whole new set of real-world behaviours to master.

TIER 1
Lasius niger
Black Garden Ant

The classic beginner species. Manage water, carbs and protein to grow from a founding queen to 500 workers. The perfect introduction to colony management.

Beginner-friendly
TIER 2
Messor barbarus
Harvester Ant

A grain-based economy. Foragers collect seeds stored in a granary, just like real Messor barbarus behaviour. Humidity now threatens your food supply.

Seeds economy
TIER 3
Camponotus nicobarensis
Carpenter Ant

A larger, hungrier species with faster brood development. Optional heating cables accelerate growth further, but double water evaporation. Master your water upgrade path or your colony dehydrates.

Temperature mechanics
TIER 4
Atta cephalotes
Leafcutter Ant

The pinnacle of the leaf economy. Foragers cut leaves; the fungus garden feeds everyone. No carbs, no protein. A fully symbiotic ecosystem you must keep in balance. Reach 10,000 workers to evolve further.

🍄 Fungus garden
TIER 5
Myrmecocystus mexicanus
Honey Pot Ant

Desert survivors with a living pantry. Foragers harvest nectar; workers fill repletes (living storage vessels) as an emergency food reserve. Starvation only strikes if both nectar and repletes run dry.

🍯 Replete economy
TIER 6
Oecophylla smaragdina
Weaver Ant

The final tier. Arboreal masters who weave leaf chambers from larval silk. Workers hunt for protein and spin silk to expand the colony across the canopy. Build all six leaf chambers and reach 15,000 workers to unlock New Game+.

Why we built this

A game with a purpose.

Pocket Colony isn't just idle entertainment. It was built to put real ant-keeping knowledge in people's hands: whether they already own a colony, are thinking about starting one, or have never heard of the hobby before.

🎓

Education first

Every mechanic reflects real biology. Water management, brood nutrition, foraging territory, colony founding. The game teaches you how ant colonies actually work.

🐜

For the hobbyist

If you already keep ants, this is your colony on a screen. The species, the challenges, even the anxiety of a colony on low water. It all maps directly to the real thing.

🌱

For the curious

Never kept ants before? Pocket Colony is a low-stakes way to discover one of the most rewarding and underrated pets you can own. No mess, no commitment, just the science.

🤝

Growing the hobby

Ant keeping is a niche that deserves a bigger audience. This game is our way of introducing it to people who would love it. They just don't know it yet.

Ant Farm Supplies stocks everything you need to start your first real colony, including the same species you've been managing in Pocket Colony.

FAQ

Common questions

What is Pocket Colony? +
Pocket Colony is a free browser-based idle simulation game where you manage a real ant colony. You start with a single founding queen and grow your workforce across 6 real ant species — from the common Black Garden Ant (Lasius niger) all the way to Weaver Ants (Oecophylla smaragdina). No download or app install required. Play at pocketcolony.co.uk/play.
Is it free to play? +
Yes, completely free. No install, no paywall, no energy gates. Optional Royal Jelly packs start from £0.99 for players who want time skips or convenience items, but every piece of game content is reachable without spending anything.
Which ant species are in the game? +
Six species across six prestige tiers, each with mechanics based on real ant biology:

T1 — Lasius niger (Black Garden Ant) — classic carbs and protein economy.
T2 — Messor barbarus (Harvester Ant) — seeds replace carbs; granary humidity mechanics.
T3 — Camponotus nicobarensis (Carpenter Ant) — larger, hungrier colony with Heating Cable upgrades.
T4 — Atta cephalotes (Leafcutter Ant) — fully herbivorous; grow a fungus garden as the colony's sole food source.
T5 — Myrmecocystus mexicanus (Honey Pot Ant) — desert nectar economy with living replete storage workers.
T6 — Oecophylla smaragdina (Weaver Ant) — silk and protein economy; expand leaf chambers to raise your worker cap.
Does it work on iPhone and Android? +
Yes. Pocket Colony is mobile-first and works in Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android without any download. You can add it to your home screen as a Progressive Web App (PWA) for a full-screen experience with push notifications for low water, daily check-ins, and colony milestones.
How long does it take to progress? +
Pocket Colony is an idle game — most progress happens while you are away. Resources accumulate at 60% speed offline. Active sessions are more efficient: do your raids, foraging events, and water refill, then close the app and return in 30-60 minutes. Reaching the first Nuptial Flight (T1 to T2) typically takes 2-3 weeks of casual play. Each later tier takes longer as the colony requirements scale up.
Who made Pocket Colony? +
Pocket Colony is made by Ant Farm Supplies, a UK-based ant keeping and ant farm e-commerce brand. The game was built to introduce the hobby of ant keeping to a wider audience, using real species and real biology as its foundation.
